Swarm Season is here! But do not fear!
Swarming is a normal process by which a new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees.
About 60% of the worker bees leave the original hive location with the old queen, leaving behind the younger bees to care for the brood. And to raise a new queen.
The reason a bee swarm looks like a clump of bees, is because all of the workers are gathered around the queen, hence forming a clump.
The queen is not the strongest of flyers, and so inevitably will need to rest at some point – perhaps on a branch, fence or maybe even on your house! Meanwhile, ‘Scout bees’ will be sent out to look for a suitable new place for the colony to live.
So, when you see a large clump of bees on your house, car or in your trees, please DO NOT spray them!
Bees are exceptionally gentle during a swarm. They have no territory to protect and only one immediate mission, to conceal the Queen as she flies in the midst of them.
As the reproductive force in the colony, the Queen is the most important bee in the swarm. The chaos of thousands of flying bees is meant to keep predators from knowing which bee is the Queen.
Honey bees are essential part of the ecosystem.
However, when honey bee hive is created in a wall or in an attic the honey bees become a danger to anyone living in that home. Allergic reactions are common and could even result in a hospital visit.
There is no physical characteristics to tell apart the European honey bee from the dangerous Africanized “killer bee”. An attack from an Africanized honey bee colony could result in the death of a pet or human.
The honey and comb needs to all be removed as well to prevent pests and damage to the home. Spraying them will only kill a small percentage of the colony and drive the bees deeper into you home.
If you do happen to spray them enough to kill them all, be prepared for the nasty aftermath. With the deceased bees no longer guarding their precious store of honey and comb, pest will invade and make a nasty mess! Let alone 60K+ bees rotting inside your wall the stench is worse than you can imagine.
If you spot a swarm or bees in your home, please Do NOT spray them! You can contact SweetNes Honey Apiaries & Beetique and we will send a rescue specialist beekeeper to come out and give you a FREE consultation.
If you agree to move forward, we will safely remove and relocate to one of our apiaries.
While prices may vary, every situation is slightly different. Our goal is to safely remove the colony, completely remove all honey and comb and to kill the pheromones inside your home to ensure that bees will not return to that location. We guarantee our removals for up to one year that bees will not return to that exact location in your home.
