the History of Black Friday + Local Deals
Black Fri·day
the day after Thanksgiving, regarded as the first day of the traditional Christmas shopping season, on which retailers offer special reduced prices.
>> History of Black Friday <<
The first recorded use of the term “Black Friday” describes a financial crisis of 1869: a stock market catastrophe set off by gold spectators, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, who tried to buy as much as they could of the nation’s gold with hopes to drive the price sky-high and sell it. However, they failed which caused the market to collapse and stocks to plummet.
The most common story behind the term “Black Friday” is linked to retailers. Accounting records were kept by hand in black and red ink; black ink referred to a profit and red ink indicated a loss. On the day after Thanksgiving stores would supposedly earn a profit moving from red to black ink. This version of Black Friday’s origin is the officially sanctioned but not accurate story behind the tradition.
The true story behind the term “Black Friday” originated in Philadelphia. In the 1950’s, police in the city of Philadelphia used the term to describe the chaos of the congested streets, clogged with motorists and pedestrians on the day after Thanksgiving. Suburban shoppers and tourists flooded the city in advance of the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year.
Today, we know “Black Friday” as the most common story, which has expanded into a four-day event with Black Friday, Small Business Saturday/Sunday and Cyber Monday. Stores started opening earlier on Friday and now the most dedicated shoppers can head out right after stuffing themselves on Thanksgiving Day and start shopping.
